Hollywood Studios

Mickey's wizard hat, the icon of Hollywood StudiosDedicated to Hollywood, not as a place on the map, but as an inspiration to those who dream, wonder, and imagine, Hollywood studios was born from an idea.  Originally planned to be a pavilion at Epcot, but Michael Eisner, Disney's new CEO at the time would suggest the pavilion be surrounded by an entirely new park, themed after show business and Hollywood.

Disney's Hollywood Studios doesn't really have a specific layout as compared to Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center; instead, it is a collection of streets and buildings that blend into each other, more like a film production studio would be.

As Michael Eisner said at the dedication of Hollywood Studios when it opened in May of 1989, "We welcome you to a Hollywood that never was-and always will be."

Here is an interactive map of Hollywood Studios.

Hollywood Studios Themed Areas

The Great Movie RideHollywood Boulevard

Serving as Hollywood Studio's main entrance, Hollywood Boulevard is the site of many parades held at the park.  Shops line either side of the street selling Disney merchandise.  It actually runs along the same principle as Main Street U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom but is definitely more suited towards movies and studios.  Hollywood Blvd. is also where you will find The Great Movie Ride, a dark ride that pays tribute to great movies of the silver screen and several classics.  Pictured to the left, the ride's exterior is set to resemble Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood California.

Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood StudiosEcho Lake

Echo Lake is a small oval shaped lagoon which was intended to be an ear for an enormous hidden Mickey in the original design of the park.  Many of the buildings around the lagoon are designed in the "California Crazy" style of architecture of Hollywood's Golden Age.  There are also many attractions within the Echo Lake area of the park including Star Tours, Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, The American Idol Experience, and Sounds Dangerous, an audio attraction featuring Drew Carey.

Lights, motors, ACTION! Stunt show at Hollywood StudiosStreets of America

"New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, I know all of these buildings look familiar."  That is because they are!  Streets of America was the original backdrop used for the gangster shootout scene in the original Studio Backlot Tour of the studio.  Recently, additions have been made to resemble buildings from San Francisco and Chicago, and the streets were opened to pedestrian traffic.  The Studio Backlot Tour can still be found here along with other great attractions such as Jim Henson's Muppet Vision 3D, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure, and Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show pictured to the left.

Disney's Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom's Liberty SquareAnimation Courtyard

Animation Courtyard brings guests into a rich environment that explodes with imagination and creativity.  From the exhibits featuring animation works from early phases of the production process to the end, to exhibits of movie props and memorabilia, Animation Courtyard is the perfect place for the creator in your family.

Signage at Disney's Pixar Place, Disney World Hollywood StudiosPixar Place

Pixar Place is the newest attraction to Disney Hollywood Studios and includes a lot of original sound stages used in actual production of films when the park hosted such facilities.  Toy Story Midway Mania, an interactive attraction inspired by classic carnival games featuring characters from Toy Story, will have the family laughing and playing for hours!  When visiting Pixar Place, many may not notice that it is set to resemble the Emeryville, California campus of Pixar Studios.

Aerosmith's Rockin Roller Coaster at Disney Hollywood StudiosSunset Boulevard

Sunset Boulevard is Hollywood Studio's first expansion which opened in 1994.  Sunset Boulevard is home to some of Disney's most exhilarating rides and spectacular shows.  Aerosmith's Rock "n" Roller Coaster takes guests on a fast paced ride to an Aerosmith concert from a recording session at their studio.  The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror introduces guests to a hotel with a terrible past.  As you ascend to the top of the building you realize, something is horribly wrong with the elevator...
